A Gardener’s Testament
Edited by her nephew and biographer, Francis Jekyll, son of her brother, Sir Herbert Jekyll, together with GC Taylor. It is a selection of Gertrude Jekyll’s articles and notes, most of them dating from the last 20 years of her life, 1912-32. Francis was a man of of scholarly and musical tastes, who worked for many years in the British Museum. He lived in ‘The Hut’, a Lutyens designed house beside Gertrude’s house, Munstead Wood, which was acquired by the National Trust in 2023. His memoir (under ‘About Gertrude Jekyll’ in this site’s bookshop) is the source of much subsequent writing about her.
During her later years, Gertrude’s literary efforts were mainly directed towards writing articles for journals such as The Garden and Country Life rather than books. The selection of articles by the editors is judged by them as reflecting ‘her most mature experience’.
