Gardens for Small Country Houses
Modern reprint under the title Gertrude Jekyll and the Arts and Crafts Garden. The book covers the relationship between house and garden; a similar theme to that of Garden Ornament, but covering smaller houses and including whole chapters devoted to particular houses, gardens and owners. Many of the ‘small’ houses described and illustrated here would be considered rather substantial by today’s standards. The book was published just before the First World War, as demand grew for smaller properties as the cost of great estates became ever more apparent; after the war, the demand was never the same again.
Gertrude Jekyll’s co-author, Sir Lawrence Weaver (1876-1930), was architectural editor of Country Life and became a civil servant during the First World War (1914-1918); in 1919, he founded National Institute of Agricultural Botany, Cambridge.
