Some English Gardens
Among the houses of interest are Berkeley Castle, visited by Gertrude Jekyll in 1869, when she was still training to be an artist and when she drew the carvings, furniture and interiors. In this book, the borders and terraces of the castle were described.
Other notable houses or castles, whose gardens are described and illustrated in this wonderful volume, are Rockingham, Montacute, Hardwick, Melbourne and Penshurst. They include some of the finest gardens throughtout Britain, the best at the time and, in many case, still magnificent specimens.
